Texas Considers Closing Four State Jail Facilities

Lawmakers in Texas will consider closing four Texas state prisons to reduce the Texas Department of Criminal Justice budget by $40 million. John Zerwas, chief budget writer, reported an estimated overall reduction of $4 billion from the previous year.  Officials confirmed the 500-bed Ware Unit in Colorado City was likely to be closed while 1,000 unit Bartlett State Jail, 275-bed West Texas Intermediate Sanction Facility and 200-bed Bridgeport Pre-Parole Facility are listed for possible closure. In addition, Rudd Unit in Brownfield would be converted to an intermediate sanction facility for more ยป
