A record number of inmates died in Florida prisons last year making it the deadliest year yet.
In 2017, 428 inmates died. This is an increase from the 356 deaths in 2016.
Authorities at the Florida Department of Corrections are scrambling to identify solutions to the problem.
The inmates who died were younger than previous years with an average age of 56.3 years, the youngest being a 22-year-old male.
Howard Simon, executive director for the Florida American Civil Liberties Union states, “I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but many of the deaths are under investigation and there are multiple causes.”
The Florida prison system is notable for being one of the most dangerous in the nation.
The causes of death are pending further investigations.
